A beater mk4 would be cool. Wouldn’t happen anymore.

I saw something close on my local CL a few months ago. It was a ‘95 black non-turbo auto with tacky (but era correct) gold badges and 130,000 miles asking $5k. The price was just a little high for it to be a total beater, but it was close. Not too many of those left - I think most have been picked up by tuners and resprayed, engine-swapped and drifted into a wall by now.

I don’t get these at all being so much money when you can get a Skyline for like $25k in perfect condition. Way better car. Sure these 2JZs are better for 1000hp builds but how many of these people paying $60k for them are doing that? Would rather have the lighter handling car that is also amazing.

My unsubstantiated theory: people paying big $$ for Supra Turbos are all from California. I don’t think you can get an imported Skyline to pass smog there and if you can it likely costs more than the inflated Supra prices to get it compliant. Apparently this is why people are paying crazy money for the limited number of Defenders that Land Rover sold in the US - you can get a well sorted imported one for like half the price, but you can't get it registered in California.

You can’t have a R34 In the US

To my tastes the Skylines look a lot worse. There’s no way I’d ever buy one. Of course I probably wouldn’t buy an old Supra either, because I could get some other faster more modern car for significantly less.

R34 is popular because it’s a movie car, R32 GTR is better than it in every way.

I see that as a possibility. RX7s are also notoriously hard to smog as well. California probably is totally a factor.
